USS Peleliu (LHA-5) was an American classic amphibious assault ship. The keel for this unit was laid in 1976, the launch took place in November 1978, and commissioning took place in May 1980. The ship was 250 meters long, 32.5 meters wide, and had a full displacement of about 39,000 tons. The maximum speed did not exceed 24 knots. The unit was armed with, among others, two RIM-116 anti-aircraft missile launchers and two 20 mm Vulcan Phalanx sets. Aviation equipment consisted of a maximum of 43 aircraft.

USS Peleliu (LHA-5) was one of the Tarawa-class ships. Tarawa-class ships were built to complement and later replace Iwo Jima-class ships. New units built in such a way as to be able to handle the landing operations of the US Marine Corps by various means of transport: helicopters, amphibians or amphibious barges. It was also assumed that the Tarawa-class ships would operate as part of larger fleet teams. Due to their size, they could play the role of light aircraft carriers and were adapted to the operation of the AV-8 Harrier II aircraft. USS Peleliu (LHA-5), shortly after entering service, was directed to the Pacific. In 1989, the unit took part in the rescue operation caused by the San Francisco earthquake in the same year. At the beginning of 1990, the unit underwent extensive renovation works, which put an end to its participation in the actions against Iraq in the years 1990-1991. In 1994, the ship operated in the so-called corner of Africa. In 2001-2002, he actively supported American activities in the Persian Gulf region related to the so-called war on terrorism. In 2004 and again in 2008 he participated in the American operations in Iraq. The unit was withdrawn from active service in March 2015.
