The nationality markings (hereinafter: insignia) on the planes of the Ukrainian air force began to be used from the very beginning of their creation, i.e. from 1917/1918, when the Ukrainian People's Republic and the West Ukrainian People's Republic were established by the decision of the central states. The Ukrainian air force in that period, shortly after World War I, used insignia referring vividly to its own national symbols. Thus, both roundelles (rondel) and in blue and yellow, as well as a checkerboard pattern in the same colors, reminiscent of the first Polish markings of combat aircraft. The so-called Tryzub, which was golden in color, and was placed on a blue shield with a golden rim. This symbol, which is the emblem of the Ukrainian People's Republic, dates back to the history of early medieval Rus! This symbol was used both as a roundelle and on vertical fins as a fin flash. However, after the fall of both Ukrainian states at the beginning of the 1920s, their territories were annexed mostly to the USSR. Only after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the establishment of an independent Ukraine, strictly Ukrainian insignia of combat machines began to be used again. The year of birth of the air force of modern Ukraine is considered to be 1992. Since the early 1990s, the Ukrainian roundelle is composed of two closely adjacent blue and yellow circles, the larger diameter circle of which is yellow. Gold Tryzub on the blue dial is also very often used as a flash fin.
