Nationality markings (hereinafter: insignia) on the planes of the Dutch Royal Air Force (i.e. Koninklijke Luchtmacht) began to be used almost from their very beginning in the summer of 1913. As early as 1914, they adopted the orange circle painted on the wings and fuselages (a kind of Dutch roundelle) as their insignia, and the vertical fins of the machines were often entirely painted orange. However, in 1921 the insignia was changed to blue, red and white roundelle, which obviously referred to the colors of the Dutch flag. It is worth adding that in the period 1939-1941 an orange triangle in a black border was used as the insignia, with one of the vertices pointing vertically downwards. Interestingly, however, many machines stationed in colonies in Southeast Asia (roughly the area of today's Indonesia), after 1939 used the Dutch flag on their vertical stabilizers as a designation of nationality, and often on the wings and hulls - a tricolor roundelle from before 1939. After 1945, the insignia of the Royal Dutch Air Force planes was adopted - a three-color roundelle in blue, red and white with an orange circle in the center.
