The Pratt and Whitney R-1830 is an American aircraft engine from the interwar period and World War II. The engine was successfully put into operation for the first time in 1932, and mass production began shortly after, resulting in the production of over 170,000 of all versions of this engine! Thus, it is assumed that it was the most widely produced aircraft engine during World War II. The length of this power unit (in the R-1830-S1C-G version) was 150 cm, with a diameter of 122 cm. The weight of the "dry" power unit of this type was 567 kilograms. The presented engine was a 14-cylinder radial engine, with a turbocharger, air-cooled, which was able to generate a maximum power of 1,200 hp. It is worth adding that the Pratt and Whitney R-1830 was produced in many versions and was constantly developed, and the differences in maximum power between these engines were significant. For example, the Pratt and Whitney R-1830-1 engine generated 800 hp, but the R-1830-S3C4-G model generated 1200 hp. This very successful and generally reliable aircraft engine was installed on many aircraft, including the Consolidated B-24 Liberator, Grumman F4F Wildcat, Douglas C-47 Skytrain and Consolidated PBY Catalina.
